The final night of group stage action takes place at Euro 2022, with three nations fighting for the final quarter-final berth.
This is what went down.
Scorers: Malard 1′, Brynjarsdóttir pen 90+12′
Goals inside the opening 60 seconds and after 102 minutes saw France and Iceland share the points in a game that saw Les Bleues’ winning run and Iceland eliminated regardless.
France, who have already qualified as group winners prior to kick-off, showed no signs of putting their feet up and took the lead after 43 seconds when Melvine Malard picked out the bottom corner with a perfect finish after Iceland were carved open down the middle.
Iceland did also muster an instant response but Sveindís Jónsdóttir’s header from a corner clipped the top of the crossbar.
France were unfortunate not to add to their lead before the break when they had a shot cleared off the line before Grace Geyoro hit the post after the restart and Malard and Geyoro were both denied goals in the closing stages by VAR.
And VAR intervened for a third time to France’s frustration by awarding Iceland a penalty in the 102nd minute which Dagny Brynjarsdóttir converted to bring France’s 16-game winning streak to an end.
Corinne Diacre’s side will now face defending champions the Netherlands in the quarter-final despite the late frustration, while Iceland exit despite not losing a game.
Scorers: De Caigny 49′
Belgium secured the final Euro 2022 quarter-final berth with a tense and hard-fought victory over Italy in Manchester.
After a scoreless first half, Belgium took the lead four minutes after the restart to put themselves in the qualification driving seat when a loose ball in the area was pounced upon by Tine De Caigny to fire home.
Italy did respond well in front of a vociferous Azzurre support who almost cheered a swift leveller, only for captain Cristiana Girelli’s effort to rattle the crossbar before she then sent an effort agonisingly wide of the upright.
Tessa Wullaert then hit the post in injury time but the miss ultimately didn’t matter as her side advanced to set up a meeting with Sweden in the last eight.
It is the first time since 2005 that Italy have exited the tournament without a victory.
