FC Barcelona have been rather unfortunate with injuries this season no matter how one looks at it. Beyond just the recent loss to Leganes, there have been other issues that have been piling up as well. Already disjointed and losing confidence, Barcelona continue to see their headaches continue to add up.

After the defeat to Leganes recently, it was confirmed that 17-year-old Lamine Yamal had suffered yet another injury to his ankle. This time around, following the official confirmation from Barcelona, it was revealed that the youngster would remain sidelined for close to a month.

Unfortunately, this injury could end up being a lot more complicated and problematic than just being a normal ankle injury. As highlighted by AS, a specialist by the name of Dr. Ripoll recently explained the kind of injury that the Barcelona winger is dealing with and the kind of implications it could have for the future:

“It’s not a typical sprain; this is a more complex injury, a minor tear in the membrane connecting the tibia and fibula, known as a syndesmosis. The prognosis is much less certain. This is his second injury to the same structure within a month. This area is far more delicate than the ankle.”

He also went on to recommend the kind of treatment that Barcelona could pursue to ensure the best kind of recovery for their young star:

“He has played in 80% of matches this season, and last year he reached 91%. Barça’s medical staff need to ensure it is fully healed, without any haste. I would recommend a biological treatment for the tear, using proteins from his own blood—a very common treatment in Spain that aids in the healing process for injuries like this.”

As for what could end up going wrong, he warned that this injury, if treated wrongly or if the player is rushed back from it, could have severe long-term consequences:

“It could lead to a diastasis, which is a separation of the tibia and fibula caused by the lack of this membrane, leaving the ankle severely unstable.”

Lamine Yamal, for better or for worse, is a fundamental piece of this Barcelona team despite his age. While it may be an unfortunate reality for the team right now, the truth is that Hansi Flick’s team is quite dependent on the 17-year-old winger to perform well as a collective unit. Unfortunately, the team will have to make do without him for now and simultaneously ensure he gets the best kind of treatment for his recovery.
