Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Napoli are closing in on the signing of reported Manchester United striker target Jonathan David.
United are in the market for a new talisman amid growing uncertainty over Rasmus Hojlund’s future. The Danish forward has struggled once again this season, and his underwhelming display in Sunday’s loss to West Ham served as yet another stark reminder that he may not be at the level the club demands.
Hojlund continues to attract interest from Italian teams and his days at Old Trafford certainly seem to be numbered. If he leaves, a replacement will be needed. But even if he stays, United still need to bring in higher-quality options to bolster their attacking line.
Some of the options mentioned to be on United’s radar include Victor Osimhen (Napoli), Benjamin Sesko (RB Leipzig), Liam Delap (Ipswich Town) and Viktor Gyokeres (Sporting CP), just to mention a few names.
Another whose name has repeatedly popped up is David. The 25-year-old’s contract at Lille expires at the end of the campaign and he has made it very clear he has no intention of putting pen to paper on fresh terms. He will therefore be available this summer as a free agent.
A previous report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that United were in “concrete talks” with David over a deal. Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur are also thought to be eyeing him.
Since January, David has been free to negotiate a pre-contract agreement, and according to Romano, Napoli are now on the verge of signing him, edging out United and other suitors in the race for his services.
Romano wrote on X, “Napoli have submitted a proposal to Jonathan David with advanced talks ongoing for a free transfer.”
“Important contract proposal has been sent to the striker who’s set to leave Lille at the end of the season.”
“There are still key details to clarify with more talks to follow.”
David has enjoyed another prolific season with Lille, plundering an impressive 16 goals and providing an additional five assists in 31 Ligue 1 appearances.
The Canadian has notched 25 goals and 12 assists across all competitions.
