CHICO! The Derby d’Italia goes the way of the side in black and white: in the second half Francisco Conceicao scored the winning goal as Juve beat Inter 1-0, following a match in which the Bianconeri came under pressure in the opening period but managed the game well in the second half.
The start of the match was tightly contested, with both teams aggressive and ready to strike the first blow. The first chance of note came in the 2nd minute, when Weston McKennie took advantage of a mistake by Hakan Calhanoglu and picked out Nico Gonzalez, who, however, was unable to hit the target.
In the 21st minute, Juventus went close to scoring with a quickfire double chance: first Nico Gonzalez won a duel with Benjamin Pavard and struck an effort on goal, but Yann Sommer was on hand deal with it, then Conceicao attempted a first-time strike, but was again thwarted by the Nerazzurri goalkeeper.
Inter responded in the 18th minute with a spectacular effort from Mehdi Taremi, which Michele Di Gregorio kept out with a stunning save before Denzel Dumfries headed wide on the follow up.
In the 31st minute, Juventus created another great chance: Nico Gonzalez played through Randal Kolo Muani, who took the ball in his stride well before shooting, but his effort deflected wide off Alessandro Bastoni.
The last thrill of the first half came in the 42nd minute, when Inter went close to taking the lead: Dumfries, who had escaped Nicolo Savona, hit the post with his powerful effort, with Di Gregorio beaten. So the teams went into the half-time interval level at 0-0, with it still all to play for.
The second half started with Juve immediately on the front foot: in the 48th minute Kolo Muani teed up Conceicao, whose weak shot did not trouble Sommer.
Inter responded in the 68th minute with a very dangerous attack: Marcus Thuram got away from Renato Veiga and picked out Dumfries, whose shot was tipped onto the post by Di Gregorio. The Bianconeri goalkeeper once again coming to his side’s rescue with a vital save.
In the 74th minute the deadlock was broken by Francisco Conceicao’s goal: Kolo Muani created the goal with an extraordinary piece of skill, as he held off the opposing defenders before performing a roulette to tee up the Portuguese forward who, with a first-time shot, beat Sommer and sent the Stadium into delirium. 1-0 Juve!
A few minutes later, in the 76th minute, the Bianconeri came close to doubling their lead: Teun Koopmeiners got on the end of McKennie’s pass and fired goalwards, but Dumfries was on hand to block it off the line.
Inter tried to fight back in the closing stages: in the 91st minute, Thuram broke free in the box and shot powerfully, but the ball flew high over the crossbar. That was to be the last chance of the match.
The evening ended on a high at the Allianz Stadium: Juve win their fourth consecutive match in all competitions (Serie A and Champions League) and now attention turns to preparation for the away match in Eindhoven, with the team buoyed by tonight’s positive result.
