Bayern Munich hosted Wolfsburg in the Frauen Bundesliga and picked up a key 1-0 win on Saturday.
Scorer: Stanway 84′ (P)
It was a top-table clash in Germany as second hosted first with just two points separating the side at FC Bayern Campus.
The tight title race comes down to the top form between Bayern and Wolfsburg, and it was a nervy opening half in this game yet neither side appeared to have their scoring boots on.
Georgia Stanway, Lina Magull, Ewa Pajor and Alexandra Popp led the way for their respective sides but couldn’t create anything worthwhile.
The best chance fell to the hosts, when Sydney Lohmann’s header off a corner kick was pushed onto the crossbar by goalkeeper Merle Frohms and the ball hit right on – but not over – the goal line.
Coming out into the second half, the hosts continued to ramp up the pressure and Wolfsburg sat back. Chances again were scare throughout the second 45 with only eight shots on target combined.
It looked as though the points would be shared, until a mental lapse from the visitors handed Bayern a glorious opportunity to win the game from the penalty spot after a Lena Lattwein handball.
Georgia Stanway then stepped up and blasted the ball into the top right corner to see the hosts go top of the table for the first time in 16 games.
The result means Bayern hold a one-point advantage over Wolfsburg with only six games to go in the league.
