Ignacio Sosa of Club Atletico Peneraol isn’t headed to Orlando City SC yet. A rumor swirling through X reports Orlando’s initial offer is rejected.
As the story goes, after scouting Sosa, Orlando proposed a loan with an option to purchase his contract.
This is a midfielder who was still under development last season. He had five limited appearances in Copa Libertadores for the club. Substituting into the matches, he got in two dribbles, four interceptions, and six tackles in only 129 total minutes.
His best effort came in a match against Rosario Central. In that brief appearance, he got in his two tackles. But he also won the only aerial duel he attempted.
So Sosa’s talent is not questioned. The organization isn’t looking to unload him. The X rumor mentions that the Penerol organization wants to work him in for more minutes in the next season.
Various sources continue talking up this rumor. But the Orlando City organization is characteristically quiet. The front office is always the last to comment on anything having to do with their roster. In fact, they wait until the contract ink is good and dry.
Scouts see Sosa developing as a strong defensive midfielder. He’s also strongest in the center of the pitch. Orlando could use a player with a talent for winning aerial duels, as Sosa has demonstrated.
With Sosa – or someone like him – on the pitch, performance will quickly improve in areas such as aerials. The club signed defender Kyle Smith partly for his performance in that area. Since 2019, he engaged in 245 aerials with a success rate of over 50%.
Emphasizing increased performance in aerial duels will move the Orlando City SC game up a notch in 2025. So supporters should keep their fingers crossed that this rumor is true.
