The Hatters' potential decision to send Joe Taylor on loan to the John Smith's Stadium would be the correct decision.

Huddersfield Town are potentially set to sign Luton Town attacker Joe Taylor, dealing Watford a transfer blow.

According to Alan Nixon, the Terriers believe they have struck an agreement with the Hatters to take the striker on loan, but they are being made to wait.

It's believed that Rob Edwards' side are keen to bring in their own attacker in the short term, with this potential move possibly key to setting Taylor free.

Even if an attacker doesn't arrive at Kenilworth Road in the coming days though and even though John McAtee has secured a move to Bolton Wanderers, the Championship side have a decent number of striker options at this stage, with the likes of Elijah Adebayo, Carlton Morris, Jacob Brown and Cauley Woodrow all able to operate up top.

Taylor, following two excellent loan spells away from Bedfordshire last term, may have fancied his chances of being involved in the Hatters' first team during the upcoming season.

But it looks as though Edwards has left the striker out of his plans for the 2024/25 campaign and with this in mind, he looks set to secure a temporary move to the John Smith's Stadium.

Tom Cleverley's Hornets were also believed to be keen on the player, but a move to Vicarage Road doesn't look likely now.

Luton may have a decent number of strikers at their disposal right now, but they can't afford to think short-term if they want to enjoy long-lasting success.

Taylor is only 21 at this stage and has already thrived in League One, so there's every chance he could be an asset in England's top two tiers in the future.

Adebayo isn't likely to stay at the club forever, considering he was linked with a move back to the Premier League this summer.

And some of their other options aren't guaranteed to remain with the Hatters for the long term either, so opting against sanctioning permanent moves for a promising player like Taylor is a good decision.

They could have included a sell-on clause in a potential permanent deal, but he could be sold for much more by Luton in two or three years, and could be an asset for the Hatters on the pitch during that time.

If he had been sold permanently and gone on to be a success with the Hornets, that would have been a real blow for Luton, considering Cleverley's side are their arch-rivals.

But at the John Smith's Stadium, Taylor could potentially be a real asset there before returning to Kenilworth Road as a better player next summer.

Joe Taylor could enjoy a more successful time at Huddersfield Town than Watford

It could be argued that a move to Vicarage Road could have paid dividends for Taylor.

The likes of Vakoun Bayo and Mileta Rajovic have been unconvincing at times during their spells in Hertfordshire, so the 21-year-old could have forced his way into the first XI.

And the opportunity to prove himself in the second tier following spells in the third and fourth tiers last season would have been exciting for the young forward.

However, there are two reasons why a move to Cleverley's side may not have paid dividends.

Firstly, the step up to the second tier may have come too soon for the player, who is still young and may have found it a big ask to step up another division.

And secondly, the Hornets have been tipped to struggle during the 2024/25 season, which wouldn't have been a major positive for Taylor in his quest to develop.

Huddersfield may be able to offer him more game time too, with the Terriers' relegation and the departures of Tyreece Campbell and Jordan Rhodes potentially giving Taylor an opportunity to play regularly in West Yorkshire.

Having already shone in the third tier last term, the 21-year-old should take plenty of encouragement from that and that should allow him to make a positive start to the season at Huddersfield if a loan move there is sanctioned.
