Manchester United’s latest accounts have revealed the cost of the club parting ways with former manager Erik ten Hag and director of football Dan Ashworth.

The accounts, running from October to December last year, show sacking Ten Hag and his backroom staff cost the club around £14.5m.

Meanwhile, United paid around £4m in severance to pay Ashworth to leave having only hired him a few months prior from Newcastle.

United had long pursued Ashworth and had to wait for a period of gardening leave from Newcastle before he could join the club, with his exit after just five months in the role coming as a huge shock.

The club had opted to extend ten Hag’s contract last summer despite speculation around his future, but he would leave the club in October following a run of poor results.

Man Utd recording an operating profit of just over £3m for the period, down from £27.5m a year before.

Revenues dropped to £198.7m for the final three months of 2024, down from £225.8m for the same period 12 months previously.

Th club’s debt also rose from £506.6m to £515.7m.

It comes amid a period of significant change at Old Trafford following the arrival of new part owners in Ineos.

Since their arrival, United have reportedly made around 250 staff redundant and latest reports suggest there could be more job losses, while ticket prices have also seen an increase.

“We recognise the challenges in improving our men’s team’s league position and we are all working hard, collectively, to achieve that,” said Manchester United’s CEO Omar Berrada.

“At the same time, we are pleased to have progressed to the knock-out phase of the UEFA Europa League and the fifth round of the FA Cup. Meanwhile, our women’s team is currently placed second in the Women’s Super League, and has reached the quarter finals of the FA Cup.

“Our redevelopment of the Carrington training complex remains on track. We continue to work towards a decision on the future of Old Trafford as part of a wider regeneration programme.

“This follows the work of the Old Trafford Regeneration Task Force in demonstrating the significant economic potential of a revitalised area around a future stadium project.”
