Manchester City always tend to have an eye on the future when they sign players to strengthen their squad. As per a new report from Jack Gaughan for the Daily Mail the world champions like to have two players in every position. One is a senior player, and the other is a young player who is ready to step into the senior player’s role when required. It is a tried and tested formula for building the world champions squad.

With this in mind, the champions have now been linked with a player who would fit this mould for City. The player in question is Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz. He would be the perfect Kevin De Bruyne replacement if Manchester City could land the German international. A new report indicates that City have concrete interest in signing Wirtz.

Florian Plettenberg has reported via X that Bayer Leverkusen is hoping to convince Wirtz to sign a new deal with the club. Furthermore, Plettenberg adds that if they cannot do this they’d prefer to sell Wirtz abroad rather than to Bayern Munich. Plettenberg adds that Manchester City’s interest in Wirtz is the most concrete at this stage. It is also included in Plettenberg’s report that Arsenal, Manchester United and Liverpool are all interested in Wirtz. Lastly, Plettenberg adds that a Real Madrid move for Wirtz next summer is currently considered unrealistic by Bayer Leverkusen.

Signing Florian Wirtz to one day succeed Kevin De Bruyne would be the dream scenario for Manchester City.

The day is coming when Manchester City will have to replace Kevin De Bruyne. While it is a possibility that no one associated with City wants to ponder it is approaching shortly. De Bruyne is in the final stages of his decorated career and the time is coming when the champions will have to move on without the club legend or with him playing a smaller role with the world champions. Replacing what De Bruyne adds to Pep Guardiola’s squad will be no easy task. But if you were to name a dream signing to step into De Bruyne’s shoes, then Florian Wirtz would likely be it.

Florian Wirtz has firmly established himself as one of the premier young playmakers in world football. He is already a key player for both club and country. The German international has shown during his time at Leverkusen that he is the key man for his team. His form at Leverkusen last season and again this season shows why he is so highly regarded. Based on what he has achieved at Leverkusen and for Germany there is little doubt that he is ready to play for a club like Manchester City. If you could pick one player to replace De Bruyne at City then Wirtz would be it. He looks to be natural successor to the Manchester City legend.
