The 27-year-old’s departure comes as no surprise. Beckie has struggled for game time with Manchester City at times this season while rumours of the player’s move to the NWSL initially surfaced late last night.
It has been reported that Beckie has signed an initial three-year deal with Portland Thorns with the option of a further year. She will move to the United States once an International Transfer Certificate (ITC) has been obtained.
Canadian international Beckie joined Manchester City from Sky Blue FC in 2018 and she has gone on to score 23 goals in 90 appearances in all competitions for the club. The player has won two FA Women’s Continental League Cups and two Vitality Women’s FA Cups in her time at The Academy Stadium.
After Beckie’s Manchester City departure was confirmed, the player told the club’s official media team “When I came to Manchester in 2018, I could have never imagined I’d stay for so long, but it was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. In the last four seasons, the moments and memories I’ve experienced will be ones I hold onto forever.
“It has been an absolute honour to wear this kit. Every day I’ve stepped inside this building I have felt so much gratitude to be a Manchester City player and I can only hope I’m leaving it in a better place than I found it.
“I came as a player and I’m leaving as a life-long fan. Once a blue, always a blue.”
Manchester City continue their season without Beckie at West Ham United tomorrow.
