Ruben Amorim had to be convinced not to quit as Manchester United manager, it has been claimed.
As the manager gears up to guide United out at the Europa League final, reports have emerged that the former Sporting manager wanted to hand in his resignation just weeks after his appointment.
ESPN report that Amorim was so overwhelmed by the scale of the job at Old Trafford, he was prepared to walk away from the job in January after a run of just one win in his first eight games.
Amorim made the United hierarchy aware of his concerns, but the likes of chief executive Omar Berrada gave him reassurances of the board’s confidence in him and promised funds to improve the squad in the summer.
And now Amorim has the opportunity to turn a disaster domestic campaign into a season to remember with European success, should they beat a Tottenham side who are similarly struggling.
Amorim will guide United to their worst ever Premier League campaign even if they finish 14th, which is out of the club's hands, having racked up the fewest wins, fewest points and most defeats of any single season since 1992.
United are putting their money where their mouth is as they reportedly close in on the £62.5million signing of Matheus Cunha from Wolves, and are also said to have held face-to-face talks with Liam Delap over a £30million move from Ipswich.
