Antwerp’s top scorer from last season Michael Frey reportedly said that last night’s cup win against Genk was his last game for the club. As reported by Voetbalkrant, the Swiss striker left before his teammates and made his way to the team bus where he was heard to say this had been his final game.
Despite being the sides top scorer last season, injuries to start the 2022/2023 season meant he began behind summer signing Vincent Janssen. The former Spurs striker had a slow start to his Antwerp career, but has began to find the net with regularity, grabbing 11 league goals in 19 matches, as well as a couple in the cup and European qualifications. The Dutch international is clearly the preferred choice for head coach Mark van Bommel.
Former Fenerbahce striker Frey has seven goals in 14 games this season in the league, following on from the 24 goals he scored last season. There is likely to be a lot of interest within the Belgian Pro League in the striker given his goal scoring record.
Outside of Frey, the club will be hoping to keep hold of talented youngster William Pacho, who has been of interest to Rangers and Monaco.
Antwerp beat Genk 3-0 in the cup quarter-finals to progress to the next round. They most recently won the competition in 2020.
