Montpellier set unwanted record as Ligue 2 relegation looms

Montpellier’s wretched Ligue 1 season has reached a new low as La Paillade collapsed at home against relegation-fighting Angers SCO (1-3). Jean-Louis Gasset’s side conceded their 12th defeat in 17 Ligue 1 games. As Ligue 1 reached the halfway stage of the season, Montpellier have only nine points so far, and a 7-point deficit on 16th-placed Saint-Etienne. Gasset said his team needed “a little miracle” to escape a now-probable Ligue 2 relegation.

Montpellier’s results are yet to improve under the tutelage of the former Marseille manager. They will have a full week of rest to prepare for Friday’s home game against Monaco as they won’t feature in the Coupe de France RO32 in midweek because they were previously humbled 4-0 by a fourth-tier side. Montpellier’s defense is clearly their Achilles heel. They concede an average of 2,47 goals per game since the start of the Ligue 1 season. L’Equipe reports that Montpellier is the fastest French top-tier team to concede 40 goals since Nice during the 1978-1979 season.
