The Addicks have brought in seven new signings already this summer, as Jones shapes his squad in an effort to improve on last season's disappointing 16th-place finish in League One.

The 51-year-old manager was appointed as Michael Appleton's successor at the beginning of February and lost just two of his 16 games in charge before the end of the season.

The Welshman will hope that his deliberate transfer strategy can help Charlton's players build some cohesion ahead of the 2024/25 campaign, in what will be his first full season in charge of the club.

Nathan Jones wanted his new signings in early

Jones wanted the majority of his new signings to be in through the door at The Valley before the start of pre-season. The Addicks are expected to make a few more additions in the coming weeks, but the main bulk of their business was completed in time for the first day back.

The Charlton squad is currently at a training camp in Slovenia as they continue their preparations for the upcoming campaign.

Jones sat down for an interview at the training camp, which was uploaded to the club's official X account, in which he discussed the importance of bringing players in early in the transfer window.

"The earlier you can get them in, the more work you can do," he said.

"Because we train a certain way and because we want to play in a certain way, it's really important that those messages are applied very early, and to as many of the squad that we are going to take forward as possible.

"It's been a tireless summer. Real hard work, everyone on the recruitment side, the club, the board, everyone has worked so hard to get these signings over the line, and we're in a really good position."

"The people that have come in have made us stronger. This is a stronger squad, it's a more athletic squad, it's a more experienced squad. We've added goals to the squad, we've added athleticism, we've added quality, experience, we've got pace.

"The group is different, it's a different group."

Nathan Jones' signings look promising for Charlton Athletic

There are similarities that can be drawn from Jones' first managerial role at Luton Town and his current situation at Charlton. He was appointed at Kenilworth Road midway through the 2015/16 season and guided the club away from the danger of relegation, before making wholesale changes to his squad ahead of the 2016/17 campaign.

Luton were beaten in the play-offs at the end of that season before achieving promotion to League One at the end of the 2017/18 campaign. Charlton supporters will hope that Jones can add another promotion to his CV during his time in SE7.

The quality of the players that Jones has brought to The Valley so far is another cause for optimism. Of the seven players that have signed for Charlton this summer, five have joined from clubs in divisions above, while Luke Berry, Matty Godden and Greg Docherty have all achieved promotion from League One in the past.

The Addicks also brought in a couple of players with experience of winning promotion from League One in January, shortly before Jones' arrival, in Macaulay Gillesphey and Rarmani Edmonds-Green.
