Newcastle United welcome Liverpool to St James’ Park in the Premier League on Wednesday night.
Eddie Howe will demand a response from his inconsistent side after dropped points to struggling West Ham and Crystal Palace over the past week. After losing at home to the Hammers, Newcastle conceded a last-gasp equaliser to draw with Palace at the weekend.
Those results leave the Magpies 11th in the Premier League table, though just four points separates Newcastle from the Champions League places.
However, the visit of the runaway Premier League leaders will prove a difficult test as Newcastle look to get their season back on track. Liverpool extended their lead in the title race to nine points after a 2-0 win over Manchester City at the weekend and have won seven consecutive games in all competitions.
Eddie Howe confirmed that Alexander Isak has not trained in the build-up to the game and the Swedish striker is a doubt due to a hip problem. Isak could join defenders Sven Botman, Jamaal Lascelles and Emil Krafth as absentees for Newcastle. None of that latter trio are expected to return before the New Year.
Callum Wilson could make his first start of the Premier League season after recently returning from his latest layoff. The 32-year-old has featured for just 32 minutes in the Premier League so far this season. Anthony Gordon offers an alternative at centre-forward.
Newcastle predicted XI: Pope; Livramento, Schar, Burn, Hall; Longstaff, Tonali, Guimaraes; Gordon, Wilson, Barnes.
Newcastle United host Liverpool in the Premier League on Wednesday 4th December 2024. Kick-off at St James’ Park is 19:30 GMT.
Newcastle vs Liverpool will be available to watch on Amazon Prime.
