Borussia Mönchengladbach have announced that Swiss centre-back Nico Elvedi has extended his contract at the club until 2027, with his previous deal expiring next summer.

On why he chose to extend his contract at the club, Elvedi said: “I got my chance here as a 19-year-old and was able to develop into a seasoned Bundesliga and also national player. Now I would like to go ahead in order to continue to master the upheaval.”

Sporting director Roland Virkus added: “Nico is one of the most experienced players in our squad and has been an absolutely reliable figure for years. We are very pleased that the open and honest dialogue we have had with Nico over the last few months has now resulted in this contract extension. This says a lot about his character and his connection to Borussia.”

Bild reports that this does not signal that the 26-year-old will not stay at the club for long. Despite the contract extension, Elvedi has a release clause worth €10m which means that Elvedi will likely leave next summer but Gladbach now has the safety net to sign a replacement and avoid losing another player on a free transfer.

Elvedi is now likely to be reintegrated into the team, the Swiss international missed the opening few games of the season as he did not want to put at risk any transfer that could have materialised. Elvedi came off of the bench in Gladbach’s 3-3 draw with Darmstadt at the weekend and will possibly regain his place in the starting 11 against Leipzig as Gladbach look for their first win of the season.
