FC Barcelona were able to get a significant amount of money on the final day of the winter transfer market. This income came not from the departure of any of their current players, but from one of their former players, on whom they still had some rights.

This player was Nico González, who finalized his move to Manchester City yesterday, for €60 million. Previously, the Blaugranes were expected to get 40% of this fee, which would have totaled up to €20.64 million.

However, there is now another mess, which can result in the Catalans getting a significantly lower amount of money.

As Mundo Deportivo has reported, Porto announced that they had acquired another 20% rights on the player from Barcelona by paying €3 million to the Catalans before finalizing Nico’s sale. Thus, the Blaugranes will get only around €13 million for this transfer.

The Portuguese club made this announcement right after announcing the sale of the midfielder to Manchester City after the English club had paid his release clause.

The income that Barcelona will receive from this operation will thus be divided into two payments. €10.32 million will come from the 20% share of the transfer fee paid by Manchester City, while another €3 million will be obtained from Porto for the other 20% of the share.

Thus, the Catalans obtained €13.32 million from Nico in this winter transfer window. But before that, they had also obtained €8.5 million from Porto when they sold him in the summer of 2023. Thus, the Blaugrana club’s total income from Nico González stands at €21.82 million.

The winter transfer window is closed now, so this operation could not help Barcelona get winter reinforcement for Hansi Flick. However, this amount will certainly come in handy next summer when they will be looking to get more players ahead of the 2025-26 season.
