There is a prestigious trophy to be lifted this Thursday in Malmö. The city will host the final of the Swedish women’s league cup (Svenska Cupen). It is the meeting between two old acquaintances, as FC Rosengård will welcome BK Häcken to their home ground.
The fans of both sides look forward to a mouthwatering clash. The last time the teams met, the exciting game ended in a 2-2 draw. They seem to be on par at the moment, which makes it difficult to pick a favourite.
In the cup’s groupstage, FC Rosengård met Växjö DFF, Alingsås and Linköping FC. The Malmö side lost none of these games and finished first in the group with a goal difference of 10-0. They progressed to the semi-final, where they played Eskilstuna United.
However, the game was a tight one. Swedish international Mimmi Larsson became the hero of the match, as she scored the only and winning goal for Rosengård.
Gothenburg side BK Häcken came up against KIF Örebro, Jitex Mölndal BK and Kristianstad DFF. Just like their final opponent, they lost none of the games. Even their goal difference of 10-2 was a similar one.
Häcken’s clash in the semi-final against Hammarby IF was decided in extra time, as both teams had scored a goal each in the regular 90 minutes. It was Johanna Rytting Kaneryd’s goal that sent her Gothenburg side to the final.
It was Häcken who won the Svenska Cupen last year and they surely seek to defend the title. However, their opponent from Malmö is in great form.
Rosengård currently leads the Damallsvenskan table, having lost no league game so far. Their last game saw them score three goals against breaking down Eskilstuna’s strong defense.
In addition, two of the team’s key players, offensive midfielder Jelena Čanković and forward Mimmi Larsson, are back from injury. Regular starter and left back Katrine Veje, however, is likely to miss the game with a cold. Nevertheless, Rosengård’s squad remains a strong and dangerous one.
BK Häcken is very much aware of this. The team sits in second place on the table and is only two points behind their opponent from Malmö. Their recent league game against Piteå IF ended in a narrow draw.
The Gothenburg side can rely on a dangerous attack, that certainly does not lack confidence. All of their regular starters will be available for the final.
Both teams have exciting players in their squad, who will give their everything in the fight for the title.
BK Häcken’s rising star Johanna Rytting Kaneryd is one of those who those watching the game should keep an eye on. Mostly used on the right wing, she is a dynamic and fast player. In addition, she puts in dangerous crosses and passes into the penalty area or goes for a goal herself, often successfully.
Sofie Bredgaard is another outstanding player to pay attention to. Having joined Rosengård only at the beginning of April, she has already become part of their starting XI. The offensive midfielder causes a lot of trouble for the opposition’s defenders with her speed and explosiveness. She is a constant threat in the final third and doesn’t shy back from going for long-distance shots on goal.
The Swedish Cup final between FC Rosengård and BK Häcken kicks off at 18:00 CET/17:00 BTS. For the Swedish audience, the game will be available to watch on SVT/SVT Play. International fans can follow live updates on the club’s social media accounts.
