Fabio Quagliarella scored his first goal of 2021 against Fiorentina on Sunday, grabbing Sampdoria’s second in a 2-1 victory. The goal happened to come on Valentine’s Day, or as we’ve dubbed it: SampValentino.

“It’s Valentine’s Day today – a special day. My wishes go to all those who are in love. The goal today was a big one, because it was important to win the game and we managed to do so,” he said.

“It was a tough encounter and we did well to dig in. We took the few chances that came our way.”

Quagliarella entered the fray along with Antonio Candreva in the second half and the striker echoed his coach’s comments on the quality of the Samp squad.

“As the boss has said, this is a good squad of players. That allows him to make changes and find in-game solutions,” he said.

“Let’s keep up the good work. We’ve got 30 points but we need to keep our feet on the ground.”

Meanwhile, having scored to take himself above Adriano Bassetto in the all-time Serie A scoring charts for Sampdoria, Quagliarella added: “It’s an important goal. [Roberto] Mancini’s tally is a bit too far off. It’s right for him to be there at the top.”
