As we enter into 2025, two of Real Madrid’s most experienced players – Luka Modric and Lucas Vazquez – will have only six months left on their current contracts.
Indeed, the veteran duo’s existing deals run out on June 30, 2025, and as things stand, both are staring at an uncertain future at the club.
Both the Croatian and the Spaniard are familiar with this situation, having experienced it just a year ago. Back then, it all ended with a signature. This time, though, their renewals are still pending.
Now, according to AS, Real Madrid will let Modric and Vazquez decide their future and will not put any sort of pressure on them to renew or leave.
The Merengues will not block their renewals if they wish to continue nor will they stand in their way if an exit is what the players seek.
Modric, the current first captain of Real Madrid, turned 39 years old back in September and even though he has featured in all games this season, his involvement has begun to wane slightly, with Dani Ceballos starting to gain greater prominence in recent weeks.
In the last nine games, Ceballos started five times and played 495 minutes, while Modric started thrice and played 334 minutes. It is a clear changing of the guard. However, his physical condition remains strong, and his quality is still apparent.
Modric’s future, as in previous years, will depend on his personal decision. He will weigh the pros and cons: his current role, the club’s plans, which might involve signing another midfielder in the summer), and whether he still feels passionate about playing.

The club will not pressure Modric either way – whether to renew or retire while he will have no shortage of offers if he opts to move on.
At 33 years old, Vazquez has become a crucial figure for Real Madrid due the injury to Dani Carvajal as he is the only available senior right-back. So far, he has played 1,230 minutes this season, more than half of what he played last year (1,872 minutes).
Like with Modric, Madrid will not block Vazquez’s renewal. Last season, the process was smooth, and the club sees him as a reliable backup for Carvajal. He also also plays a key role in the locker room, serving as a bridge between generations.
However, it is no secret that Trent Alexander-Arnold is on Real Madrid’s radar. If they sign the Liverpool ace, Vazquez could find himself sidelined.
As such, it is another moment of weighing options, not only for Vazquez but Modric as well, with the future still uncertain for both players. For now, Real Madrid will place the decision in their hands.
