Jamie Redknapp believes a surprise Paul Pogba return could be key to Manchester United’s chances of success against Chelsea on Sunday.

Pogba has been sidelined since picking up a hamstring injury in early September and José Mourinho this week suggested the Frenchman is unlikely to be fit until after the international break at the earliest.

However, Redknapp seems to believe the 24-year-old could be in line for a shock comeback as early as this weekend and feels his presence in United’s midfield has been sorely missed.

“Pogba didn’t have the best of times last season but he gives this midfield a different dimension,” the former Liverpool and Spurs midfielder told Sky Sports.

“If they can get him in there [for Chelsea], I’m sure they’ll look a lot better team as well.”

Meanwhile, Redknapp’s fellow Sky Sports pundit Alan McInally feels Ashley Young has become just as important to the Red Devils as Pogba this season.

Young impressed in Saturday’s 1-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur and McInally says the 32-year-old utility man should be one of the first names on Mourinho’s team-sheet at present.

“I thought he was on his way out, I never ever thought he was a starter,” McInally told Premier League daily.

“The boy has been absolutely different class.

“If anything, as much as you talk about Pogba being on the team sheet, De Gea, Lukaku, Rashford, Valencia – there’s your five. I don’t think you can leave him [Young] out of the football team.

“He’s been so important for Manchester United in his versatility but on that left side, I don’t see Shaw replacing him.

“Even if he played further forward, I would have no problem playing him.

“In terms of having to wait for his chance, he has – and the boy has been different class.”
