USA struck inside the first minute to defeat Canada in Sunday’s Concacaf Gold Cup clash in Kansas City.
Scorer: Moore 1′
Barely 20 seconds had elapsed when the hosts made the breakthrough. Kellyn Acosta combined with Sebastian Lletget to put the ball on a plate for Shaq Moore to tap home from close range.
It was the Tenerife right-back’s first international strike, and the fastest goal scored in American senior men’s team history.
Canada were denied a penalty just minutes later when both the referee and VAR decided not to punish Walker Zimmerman for a clear foul on Richie Laryea.
With the USA unable to build on their dream start, the Canucks grew into the game and Tajon Buchanan went close on a couple of occasions in the second half to drawing his side level.
But an equaliser never came and the Americans held on to claim the three points and finish ahead of their northern neighbours on top of Group B.
Both teams will feature in next weekend’s quarter-finals.
