Luciano Spalletti and Mateo Retegui both faced criticism after Italy’s 3-1 loss at home to France on Sunday evening, as some outlets called it the Atalanta striker’s worst performance in an Azzurri shirt to date.
There had been a lot of excitement surrounding Italy’s pool of strikers heading into the international break, as the Serie A top scorer charts are currently being led by two Italians in Retegui (11 league goals) and Moise Kean (eight league goals).
However, against France, Retegui had just 14 touches of the ball, registered zero shots and no completed dribbles, before being hauled off after 66 minutes in favour of Kean, who got involved slightly more after his introduction, but also wasn’t presented with any clear-cut opportunities.
Sky Sport Italia suggested that it was Retegui’s ‘worst performance’ in an Italy date since his debut 18 months ago, while Corriere dello Sport said it was ‘hard to justify’ why he had so little impact.
Sky suggest that the responsibility should be split evenly between Retegui and Spalletti, hinting that the CT failed to get the best out of the current Capocannoniere with his 3-5-1-1 system.
