Tottenham were held at bay by a stunning goalkeeping display from Kaua Santos in the opening leg of their Europa League quarter-final against Eintracht Frankfurt.

The Brazilian shot-stopper pulled off a series of exceptional saves at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, frustrating Ange Postecoglou’s men throughout the evening.

Frankfurt’s Hugo Ekitike underlined why he's been attracting interest from several Premier League sides, putting the visitors in front within six minutes with a precise low finish.

Spurs reacted positively and began to dominate proceedings before Pedro Porro leveled the match with an audacious backheel flick.

After the break, Tottenham attacked with purpose and looked destined to score again, but were denied by the frame of the goal and three key interventions from Santos.

In a breathless spell, both Lucas Bergvall and Rodrigo Bentancur struck the crossbar, while Son Heung-min and James Maddison were each thwarted by the in-form Frankfurt goalkeeper.

As the match edged into added time, Santos came to Frankfurt's rescue once more, producing a superb fingertip save to keep out Micky van de Ven’s bouncing header.

Currently 14th in the Premier League standings and already eliminated from both domestic competitions, the Europa League represents Tottenham’s last shot at a trophy this season.

Manager Postecoglou, determined to uphold his reputation for "always winning" trophies in his second year in charge, will be counting on a strong performance from his squad in the return leg in Frankfurt on 17 April.
