Statistics back up the impression that striker Marcus Thuram is showing a more ruthless streak in front of goal at Inter Milan this season.

Today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Corriere della Sera, via FCInterNews, note that the 27-year-old is scoring one out of every three shots this campaign. That is in sharp contrast to Lautaro Martinez.

Thuram has been the player Inter have turned to for goals at the start of this season.

The Frenchman has scored nearly half of the Nerazzurri’s sixteen goals in the league so far.

Thuram scored decisive braces against Genoa and Atalanta, and went one better with a hattrick against Torino.

That is a testament to a new clinical edge to the former Borussia Monchengladbach striker’s game.

Last season, Thuram did get his share of goals. But he was not massively prolific. His contribution was as much about assists and linkup play as it was about goals.

This campaign, though, Thuram has operated more and more in the penalty area.

The Frenchman has confidently attacked the space in behind the opposition defensive line.

And the result has been more chances that have been very close to goal for Thuram.

The 27-year-old has also been bolder in terms of rising to meet aerial crosses. This has resulted in a slew of headed goals.

This new, more clinical version of Thuram has managed to score with one out of three shots he’s taken in Serie A.

The same is not true of Nerazzurri captain Lautaro Martinez.

The Argentine has taken ten shots for every one goal that he’s scored.

That is a testament to the fact that, unlike Thuram, Martinez has looked less sharp than last season in the box.

Perhaps lacking fitness, the Inter captain has not quite had the extra half-yard of pace he’s needed to get the better of opposition defenders.

And the result has been more mediocre shots for Martinez.
