The 2021 Olympic games in Tokyo officially kicks off on Friday but thankfully for us the football began today.
Here’s what went down on day one …
Scorers: Blackstenius 25′, 54′, Hurtig 72′.
The USWNT suffered their first defeat in 44 games as a ruthless Sweden side pulled off a remarkable 3-0 victory to kick off Group G.
Despite the US being considered favourites in Tokyo, Sweden impressed early on and went close through Stina Blackstenius and Fridolina Rolfö.
The pressure eventually told and Blackstenius headed the Swedes into the lead after an impressive cross from Sofia Jakobsson.
Vlatko Andonovski’s side grew into the game slightly at the start of the second half and almost equalised through Rose Lavelle, although her header crashed off the post from close range.
But that resurgence was short-lived and Sweden stamped their authority on the game when Blackstenius grabbed her second when she finished at the back post from a 54th-minute corner.
Lina Hurtig put the game to bed with a header into the roof of the net after being picked out by Hanna Glas.
Scorers: White 18′, 73′.
Team GB got their Olympics campaign off to the perfect start with a comfortable 2-0 win over Chile thanks to a brace from Ellen White.
Hege Riise’s side were in control throughout the opening Group E encounter and took a deserved lead after 18 minutes when Lauren Hemp headed down Lucy Bronze’s cross for White to force home her first from close range.
It was that combination again for the second goal 17 minutes from time. Bronze produced a chip to the far post where an unmarked White volleyed home from inside the six-yard box.
Team GB face Japan in their second group game on Saturday.
