Switzerland 1-4 Netherlands: Player ratings as Dutch secure quarter final spot | OneFootball

The Netherlands earned their place in the Euro 2022 quarter finals as they secured a 4-1 win over Switzerland, who exit the tournament at the group stage.

The Swiss started well but went behind in the second half due to Ana-Maria Crnogorcevic's headed own goal but soon drew level with a sharp move that saw Geraldine Reuteler net the equaliser.

However, the Dutch soon began to take control and wrapped things up late on as substitute Romee Leuchter beat Thalmann to the ball to nod in before a quickfire brace of strikes from Victoria Pelova and Leuchter turned the game into a rout.

They will face France in the quarter finals and manager Mark Parsons will be keen to have striker Vivianne Miedema, who missed out on Sunday as she recovers from Covid-19.

Switzerland impressed with their work rate and desire during the first half as they pressed for the opener and went close through Sandy Maendly, whose brilliant run and shot from 25 yards forced a tipped save from Daphne van Domselaar.

They then survived a penalty scare at the other end. Lineth Beerensteyn scampered past Noelle Maritz and was well smothered by Gaelle Thalmann, only for a spot kick to be given. However, the decision was soon overturned through VAR intervention.

Sweden then went ahead in their clash with Portugal, giving Switzerland the initiative though a win still needed from their side.

Instead it was the Dutch who went closest next as Sherida Spitse whipped in a free kick which found Jackie Groenen, but the Manchester United midfielder saw her first time effort held by Thalmann.

Sweden had gone 3-0 up by half time to give Switzerland another boost, but instead it was the Netherlands who took a stranglehold on Group C by going 1-0 up.

Defender Stefanie van der Gragt got free at the back post and headed Spitse's corner back towards goal, where Ana-Maria Crnogorcevic could only further help the ball into the net by heading beyond Thalmann.

However, the Swiss were level just four minutes later as they cut through the Dutch defence on the counter attack. Ramona Bachmann burst free down the left and squared to Geraldine Reuteler, who sorted her feet out in the box to poke past Van Domselaar.

They should have completed the turn around and taken the lead just minutes later through Coumba Sow. The Paris FC midfielder was found in acres of space inside the box, but shot straight at Van Domselaar before again being denied by a combination of the goalkeeper and the post.

Switzerland soon began to tire and the Dutch sealed their spot in the quarter finals as substitute Leuchter took advantage of a Thalmann mistake to loop a header into the corner.

Second half injury time saw the Dutch turn the win into a thrashing, with Victoria Pelova turning in from a Swiss deflection before Leuchter got her second, sliding in from close in.

GK: Gaelle Thalmann - 7/10 - Good catch from Groenen's effort. Came out well to deny Beerensteyn and rightfully saw the penalty decision overturned. Stayed big to stop the Netherlands going ahead late on with a double save but was eventually beaten four times.RB: Noelle Maritz - 6/10 - Had some difficulty with Janssen. CB: Viola Calligaris - 6/10 - Struggled to match Beerensteyn's pace. Played into midfield nicely.CB: Luana Buhler - 5/10 - Made one exceptional block, fearlessly denying Roord's volley with her face. Daphne van Domselaar - 8/10 - An alert and composed display from Van Domselaar, who kept the two sides level until half time and wonderfully denied Maendly's effort from distance. Ended the game with six saves.RB: Lynn Wilms - 7/10 - Steady enough at right back and found herself in space to cross into the box for Leuchter's first effort.CB: Stefanie van der Gragt - 6/10 - Headed towards goal to force Cmogorcevic into an own goal. Was beaten a little too easily by Reuteler for the equaliser.CB: Aniek Nouwen - 5/10 - Lost the ball a few times and wasn't authoritative at all in defence.LB: Dominique Janssen - 7/10 - Got the step overs out and played some intelligent passes to open play up for the Dutch.CM: Jackie Groenen - 6/10 - Drifted at the back of a set piece to connect with a free kick, but hit it straight at Thalmann.CM: Jill Roord - 5/10 - Not that influential but had a few cracks at goal and was accurate enough with her passes.CM: Sherida Spitse - 8/10 - Great corner which picked out Van der Gragt before the opener.
