Despite a slow start, Switzerland did enough to beat Philippines 2-0 on Friday and start their World Cup campaign with a win.
Scorers: Bachmann (PEN) 44′, Piubel 64′
After New Zealand’s win over Norway on Thursday, the second lot of Group A sides kicked their tournament off in earnest.
Despite boasting players from the Women’s Super League in England, Division 1 Feminine in France and the Frauen Bundesliga in Germany, Switzerland really struggled in the first half.
Despite enjoying 75 per cent of the ball, they never really looked like endangering the Philippines goal.
There best chance came with five minutes of the first half to go as Ana-Marie Crnogorcevic found space inside the area but mistimed her first time shot as it flew over the bar.
Right on the stroke of half time though, Switzerland went ahead.
Ramona Bachmann was calmness personified from the penalty spot as she placed her effort into the bottom left-hand corner.
Into the second half and the Swiss were showing their class now and got a second on the hour mark.
A goalmouth scramble saw Seraina Severin Piubel net from just inches out on the third attempt.
