Speaking at a press conference during Germany’s Euro 2024 training camp, Thomas Müller commented on the possibility of following Toni Kroos into retirement (via @iMiaSanMia).

When asked about retiring from international football as well as from Bayern Munich, Müller said: “With the national team? I’m not thinking about retirement yet. I’m only thinking about the task at hand. We’ll see about everything else later. I have one year left on my contract (with Bayern). I can’t let my employer down. They’re relying on me, in a certain way”

Müller’s former Bayern and long-time international teammate Kroos announced last week he would retire from football overall after Euro 2024.

With Bayern, Müller has a contract until 2025, having signed an extension earlier this season, however, under Thomas Tuchel, the 34-year-old has been playing a greater role off of the bench. So Müller’s future at the end of his contract will likely depend on how he is used under likely new manager Vincent Kompany.

A positive Euro 2024 may be the perfect place for Müller to end his international career as by the time the 2026 World Cup comes around he will be 36 and more players will have likely leapfrogged him in the international pecking order as he plays as a backup option to Jamal Musiala, Florian Wirtz and Ilkay Gundogan in the Germany starting 11.
