Paris Saint-Germain earned a 3-1 win over Aston Villa in the first leg at Parc des Princes on Wednesday, coming from behind after a 1-0 deficit with three unanswered goals.
While PSG showed their quality, could manager Unai Emery be partly to blame for the situation that allowed the Parisians to stage a comeback? After Aston Villa took the lead, Desire Doue quickly equalized, sending the teams into halftime at 1-1.
Doue’s goal seemed to set the tone for the second half. Early on, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia gave PSG the lead, putting them up 2-1.
It appeared the match would finish 2-1, but Nuno Mendes wrapped up the win with a late goal, putting PSG in a comfortable 3-1 position heading into the second leg.

After the match, Aston Villa manager Unai Emery spoke with TNT Sports and shared a bold claim regarding his squad’s mindset as the scene shifts to Villa Park for the second leg (via BBC).
“It was more or less the expectation I had before the match – 2-1 or 3-1. We will play at home next week and it will be a huge challenge for us, but we will feel strong at home with our supporters at Villa Park.”
“Today, we needed to be disciplined in defense, and even when we were losing 2-1, we had three approaches in their box. More or less, we are right in our momentum to be close to a result. The last goal we conceded, we have to accept it. Our mind doesn’t change a lot – we have to win at home and by more than one goal.”
