England head coach Sarina Wiegman says that her side will be prepared for differences in latest opponents Germany’s style of play when the two nations meet in an international friendly at Wembley Stadium on Friday evening.

The Lionesses will contest four home international friendlies before the end of the year. Germany are up first, a side that England defeated in the same stadium in the UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 final.

Germany recently appointed Christian Wück as their new head coach and Wiegman says that her side are well-prepared for some differences in the opposition on Friday evening.

“Germany have always been a very powerful team, very physical too,” Wiegman said when speaking in the pre-match press conference. “They want to play a possession game but they don’t hesitate to play the long ball neither, so we have to be prepared for that. They have a new coach now and may do some different things, so that’s the challenge for us.

“It’s a nice challenge because we don’t exactly know what they will do, we are prepared for everything. It’s really good for us to get that experience tomorrow at the highest level.”

After qualifying automatically for next summer’s UEFA Women’s EURO, England now begin their preparations for the tournament. Wiegman says that the upcoming friendlies present opportunities to experiment with her squad.

She said “We have four friendlies in these two windows where we can try out things. Hopefully, we will have as many players available as possible that we want to select for the team.

“It is really important to have this occasion to play against Germany, who are a top team, at Wembley, to try out things and to get information about us as a team; where we are right now and going forward both collectively and as individuals.”

The game against Germany will bring back fond memories of that UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 final success but Wiegman says that England have to move on.

She said “Of course, we will always cherish that [moment]. It was one of the biggest moments of my career and my life but now is now and we are moving forward.

“It’s a totally different [German] team and we are a different team because we’ve moved on too. It’s the start leading into the next EUROs in the summer.”

England’s international friendly against Germany kicks-off at 7.30pm on Friday evening. Tickets remain on-sale and can be purchased by clicking here.
