‘We don’t understand’… Eric Garcia addresses bizarre VAR episode from Barcelona vs Las Palmas

FC Barcelona got the full three points from their visit to the Canary Islands to face Las Palmas in their latest La Liga tie, even though one can argue that the team did not put on a display that most fans would have hoped for.
Hansi Flick made two notable changes to his preferred starting lineup for this game. One of these changes was the introduction of Fermin Lopez for Gavi, while the other change saw Inigo Martinez being replaced by Eric Garcia.
The Spanish centre-back was involved in one of the more bizarre scenes from this game, as the VAR referee recommended the on-field referee to review an action for possible handball inside the Blaugrana box by Garcia, even though the Las Palmas attackers were in a clearly offside position, and one of them had also touched the ball with his hand.
As Mundo Deportivo has reported, the former Manchester City defender was also asked about this incident as he talked to the media after the full-time whistle, to which he replied:
“I was very clear that it was offside and that then it hit his hand. Then it hit my hand when I was about to place it on the ground, that’s what the referee said. After this week, it’s normal for everything to be reviewed a bit…”
The centre-back went on to showcase his confusion about why the play was reviewed:
“What we don’t understand is why they make him review the play when they already know it’s offside; the play should have ended there.”
Other than this incident, the Barcelona defender expressed his happiness with the result:
“We regained the lead after a significant disadvantage, and it’s good to keep it. We knew it was going to be tough, and we’re happy to have earned three important points.”
Garcia admitted his team was inaccurate with passes in the first half, and revealed what Flick told them at half-time:
“We were inaccurate in our passing during the first half, but we adjusted a couple of things at halftime. What did Flick tell us? Things about positioning. And to miss fewer passes…”
This latest match was another indication of Hansi Flick’s increasing confidence in Eric Garcia. Hopefully, the defender will continue to put in good performances whenever he gets the opportunity, especially as the team will be needing his contributions in this upcoming stretch of the season.
