Middlesbrough are hoping to secure a move to sign Ryan Giles from Hull City this summer

Middlesbrough’s preference for signing Ryan Giles from Hull City this summer remains a loan move, but Acun Ilicali has opened the door for a deal to be struck by revealing that he will allow the wing-back to depart the MKM Stadium this summer.

According to The Northern Echo, Boro are reluctant to pay the £4 million figure that saw the Tigers sign him from Luton Town this summer as part of an obligation to buy.

Giles spent the second half of last season on loan with the Yorkshire outfit, which included a buy clause that had to be triggered this summer.

However, this has not ended Middlesbrough’s hopes of completing a deal to re-sign the defender, who previously spent the 2022/23 campaign on loan at the Riverside.

The full-back contributed 11 assists to the Teesside club from 45 appearances in the Championship as Michael Carrick guided the team to a fourth place finish.

Middlesbrough are aiming to secure a loan move for Giles this summer, as they look to reunite Carrick with the left-back.

Hull are braced for a deal, with the Tigers looking to raise funds in order to ease the burden on their financial situation.

It remains to be seen whether a loan deal can be agreed, or if a permanent agreement will be needed to resolve negotiations.

But Hull owner Acun Ilicali has confirmed that he will not stand in the player’s way if he wants the move.

Ilicali has told Hull Live.

"As you saw last year, so many big names came to us in the Championship, like Fabio Carvalho and Tyler Morton from the big clubs, so we will bring in new boys. I'm sure we will be in a good place with my team."

Boro have already had a busy start to the summer window, bringing in Aidan Morris and Delano Burgzorg from Columbus Crew and Mainz respectively, as well as securing a permanent contract for Luke Ayling after his Leeds United loan expired.

The Teessiders are targeting a top six place in the Championship next season, having come eighth in the prior campaign, one place below Hull in the table.

Giles was a regular presence in the team under Liam Rosenior when he initially moved to the MKM Stadium on loan, but fell out of favour in the closing weeks of the campaign, losing his spot to Matty Jacob.

He ultimately made 17 league appearances for the club, starting 11 times, as the Tigers missed out on the play-offs by just three points.

Hull City set for summer windfall irrespective of potential Ryan Giles deal

Hull are set to receive a big windfall from the potential sales of Jacob Greaves and Jaden Philogene, which could have an impact on Giles’ situation.

It has been reported that deals have been agreed with Ipswich Town for both of their star players, which will be in the region of £35 million in total.

It has been claimed that Philogene will cost up to £18 million, but it has yet to emerge what the final figure will be for Greaves’ switch to Portman Road, should it get over the line.

This should help Hull’s finances, which could hinder negotiations over a move for Giles unless they agree to a loan move to the Riverside.

Ryan Giles signing would be a great move for Middlesbrough

Giles enjoyed a great spell with Middlesbrough in 2022-23, and he particularly thrived once Carrick was appointed as manager in October 2022 to replace Chris Wilder.

His return to the Riverside Stadium could be a real boost for both parties, as neither were quite the same last season once they split.

Bringing him back to Teesside could be the opportunity he needs, as he has bounced around quite a lot in the last couple of years.

Going back to an environment where he thrived should be good for his development, and Boro will really benefit if he does get back to his best form, but it all depends on whether a deal can be struck.
