Where do Philippe Clement’s comments leave Rangers?

So where do Rangers manager Philippe Clement’s comments yesterday leave the club with regards the transfer window?

Indeed, the Belgian boss ruffled many feathers by alleging he was misled by the board, and informing fans the club has no money for signings without selling players first.

So where does this news leave us?

So far this window Rangers have spent ‘new’ money of £4.5M – a total of £9M.

£4.5M was already ringfenced for Mohamed Diomande, and now £2.5M has been invested in project player Hamza Igamane, not to mention the circa £1M for Jefte and likely £350,000-£500,000 for Connor Barron. That’s £4.5M give or take.

The only frees were Clinton Nsiala and Liam Kelly.

We have said goodbye to a glut of first team players, including loans, meaning around 8 players have definitely left – Barisic, Jack, Lundstram, McLaughlin, Roofe, Sima, Silva and McCrorie.

So what now?

The bottom line is there is no disposable – there was no ‘new’ cash for players, the £4.5M was the £3M we managed to avoid spending in January (three loans instead).

And this means that unless we do sell assets this summer, Rangers are now limited to Bosmans and loans.

There is no cash, it was all dependant on sales, and so Rangers ITK sources saying that we’re going to secure deals in the coming weeks is guesswork at best, and presumably only applies to Bosmans, loans and some youth additions.

In terms of genuine quality signings, we just don’t have any serious money without selling a player or two first, and we’ve only done that with the circa £250,000 for Robby McCrorie. Which is peanuts.

So where are we now?

In genuine limbo.

Rangers’ squad is dire, it’s weaker than it was last season, the new signings aside possibly Connor Barron have added little, and Clement himself is now on record as admitting it’s not good enough going forward, with no imminent prospect of fixing that.

The stadium fiasco is not helping either, Rangers unable to play at Ibrox until an undetermined time probably into the autumn, or worse.

The season starts in 3 weeks and we’re nowhere near ready.

Preseason performances and results have not been encouraging, and many fans argue it’s the ‘same old sh*t’ and the same mistakes and issues.

We can’t exactly debate that that’s unfair.

Honestly, while the world hasn’t caved in, there’s nothing at the club to indicate grounds of positivity and optimism.

We’re very much on the fence at best right now….
