Jude Bellingham had best Ballon d’Or result for an Englishman in 19 years

Rodri became the first Premier League player to win the Ballon d’Or since 2008 as he was celebrated in Paris on Monday night.

The Manchester City midfielder lost only one game for club and country last season, the FA Cup final against Manchester United, but it was otherwise a hugely successful campaign that brought Premier League and Euro 2024 success.

However, Rodri’s Ballon d’Or win was overshadowed to a degree by Real Madrid’s boycott after the ceremony, after they found out Vinicius Junior was going to miss out.

No Madrid players or staff were in attendance in Paris, despite winning the men’s club of the year award and Carlo Ancelotti being named the best men’s coach.

Vinicius came second in the voting, ahead of team-mates Jude Bellingham and Dani Carvajal, with Madrid players dominating the top end of the rankings after Champions League and LaLiga glory last season.

Bellingham is the first Englishman to finish in the top three in the Ballon d’Or since Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard in 2005.

Kylian Mbappe and Harry Kane, who shared the Gerd Muller Trophy, were both in the top ten, just ahead of Phil Foden.

Arsenal had four players in the 30-man shortlist and Martin Odegaard finished ahead of his team-mates, with the Gunners captain 19th in the voting.

Bukayo Saka was 21st, while Cole Palmer was down in 25th despite a stellar first season at Chelsea.
