Borussia Dortmund were interested in signing Michael Olise last summer, but the French winger proved to be too expensive for the club.

Michael Olise has made an excellent start to life at Bayern Munich, scoring seven goals and assisting a further four in 15 appearances across all competitions. But if things had gone slightly differently, he could well have been a Borussia Dortmund player.

Borussia Dortmund thought Michael Olise was too expensive

According to SportBILD, the Black and Yellows wanted to sign Olise from Crystal Palace last summer. BVB wanted to sell Donyell Malen to fund a move for the 22 year old. Those in charge at Borussia Dortmund enquired about the costs of a possible transfer but ultimately came to the conclusion that Olise was too expensive for the club.

The likes of Chelsea and Manchester United were also interested in signing Olise, but ultimately Bayern Munich won the race for his signature.

The magazine adds that the situation was similar to 2023, when Borussia Dortmund turned down the opportunity to sign Granit Xhaka from Arsenal and he ended up joining Bayer Leverkusen. The Switzerland international ended up playing a crucial role in Leverkusen's stunning unbeaten run to the Bundesliga title last season.

It is unclear just how serious Borussia Dortmund's interest was in signing Michael Olise. The France international's profile would have made him an excellent signing for the club. However, Bayern spent 53 million euros to sign the winger, which is a lot more than BVB have ever spent on a new signing. So it is no surprise that the possible move to the Westfalenstadion did not go through.
