Early Mistakes and Late Goal Spoil Celebration

Bayern entered Saturday’s match with Leipzig knowing that a win would secure the Meiserschale this season after missing out last year.

Vincent Kompany would have to do it without Harry Kane who missed through yellow card accumulation. Kompany would make several changes to the starting eleven with Jonas Urbig, Sacha Boey, Eric Dier, Josip Stanišić, Konrad Laimer, Joshua Kimmich, Aleksander Pavlović, Michael Olise, Thomas Müller, Leroy Sane and Serge Gnabry filling out the lineup.

Things We Noticed

Sleepy Start

The first half of this match was one of the worst all season. Bayern was listless in every aspect of the game and it was unsurprising when multiple mistakes lead to the first goal from Leipzig in the eleventh minute. Leipzig would increase their lead to 2-0 in the 39th minute after more sloppy defending on a set piece.

The most worrying part of all this was that it wasn’t one or two players. It was literally the entire team. Not a single one of them looked like they were prepared for this match nor did they play with any urgency.

They really created next to no chances and gave the ball away far too easily in dangerous areas throughout the half. There seemed to be next to no hope for them to clinch the title based on their performance.

Good Response

However, Kompany clearly had some words with them and they came out in much better form in the second half. It took 17 minutes for them to get one back through Dier but it took only one minute after that to add a second through Olise to make it 2-2.

With Leipzig on their heals, Bayern played much more aggressively and created multiple chances, but it would take until the 83rd minute to find a third goal through Sané who was left open in the box and smashed it home.

The Bayern section of the crowd thought this was surely the winner and even the team started to prepare to celebrate after the whistle with Kane and others making their way down to the sidelines.

Wait To Celebrate

However, Leipzig had other ideas and with seconds to spare in the four minutes of added time, Yussuf Poulsen chipped one over Urbig to cancel the celebratory mood.

Unfortunately, it’s hard to say that Bayern deserved more. They made far too many mistakes to deserve a win today and while they had the chance to finish off the title, Leipzig earned their point.

Bayern will now have to wait and see what happens between Leverkusen and Freiburg tomorrow where anything but a win for Leverkusen would also clinch the title or they might be forced to wait till next weekend against Monchengladbach where they will have the chance to clinch again with a win regardless and celebrate at home.
