Ruud van Nistelrooy entered the Leicester job, and fans had expectations. The Foxes needed to at least show a weekly fight. Ideally, they would prove worthy of playing top-flight soccer. There is a reason for the vacancy in the first place, but since taking over, it has been a series of poor showings from the new manager's side.
Recent results and on-field performances have fallen short. It was understood that RvN wasn't given much to work with. The January transfer window didn't provide the reinforcements that were hoped for.
Needless to say, more was expected. Even if the same win-loss record had occurred, the play itself has not improved. The play oftentimes doesn't look worthy of Premier League consideration. Wes Morgan even took to talkSPORT to explain his viewpoint of the club, as well as the decreasing chances of things being turned around.
Former defender and title-winning captain for LCFC, Morgan, shared what he views as most concerning at the moment:
"We all can agree, you know, defensively, that's been a big, big issue for Leicester this season. Leaked far too many goals, conceding far too many chances, and if your defence isn't strong, you don't have much of a chance."
This speaks to the shocking levels that have been on display. Too often, easy goals are given up. The ongoing onslaught of chances makes it impossible to not fall behind. Goals are expected, but giving up too many great chances to the opposition spells disaster.
Listening to Morgan's words, it's clear that there isn't much room for hope. Getting positive results will be impossible to come by if the midfield and backline continually expose Mads Hermansen.
The now-retired player also spoke about how demoralizing constant losing is. It can be difficult to maintain hope and motivation after continuing to give up bad goals. This led to him suggesting a formation and lineup change. If nothing else, to change things up.
Unfortunately for the fanbase, this would only serve as temporary pain alleviation.
To bring about change, something or someone will need to drastically shift within the grounds. This could mean a deserved relegation at this point. An alternative would be the players collectively banding together and showing a consistent renewed effort and spirit on the pitch.
The point gap is close enough where it wouldn't take much. However, the current state of this side suggests that it can only come in a lower-tier league. Morgan knows that staying up is within reach. Considering the current form of Leicester, he also admits that it couldn't be further.
