Celtic FC Women slipped to a 3-2 defeat in the Fourth Round of the Scottish Cup, losing out against Glasgow City.
Despite creating plenty of chances to win the game, it ultimately ended in defeat for the Hoops at Petershill Park.
With a brief break from league duties on Sunday afternoon, the Ghirls faced another derby outing, making the short trip to face Glasgow City.
With a place in the next round of the cup up for grabs, it was bound to be a tough outing for both sides, who were aiming to advance to the next stage of the competition.
It was arguably the Hoops who started the better of the two sides, enjoying a strong first half display, creating a number of early chances.
On a few occasions, Maria McAneny and Saoirse Noonan had the chance to open the scoring but couldn’t do enough to trouble Lee Gibson.
The Celts didn’t have to wait long for that opener though as Lucy Ashworth-Clifford took advantage on 19 minutes.
Hitting a superb effort from long range, the winger found the back of the net to give the Hoops a well-deserved lead.
Following the all-important first goal of the game, the match entered a slight period of chaos as Glasgow City levelled things up from the penalty spot.
What followed was a dramatic few minutes of action as the home side appeared to take the lead just five minutes later.
However, after a discussion with his fellow official, several minutes after the game, the referee soon indicated that the goal would not stand following a handball.
Just moments later, Celtic took advantage of that, going up the other end and grabbing a goal of their own as Morgan Cross’ delivery was diverted into the back of the net by a City defender.
Heading into the break, it was a well-earned advantage for the Ghirls, who could have even had a few more in the first half.
However, they would soon find themselves fall behind for the first time in the match as Glasgow City turned the match on its header.
Scoring first from a corner, the home side completed the turn around just before the hour mark as Lovera grabbed her second of the match.
The Celts didn’t appear to let those errors effect their play, trying to get forward and create more chances.
Substitutes Abi Harrison and Mathilde Carstens had late chances to level up once more, but those strikes were blocked off.
As the game entered the closing stages, Lucy Ashworth-Clifford also looked to have a chance, but just couldn’t wrap her foot around the effort.
Ultimately, it ended in defeat for the Hoops, who exit the Scottish Cup at the Fourth-Round stage.
With the league title still very much up for grabs, the Celts’ attention turns to that, with a return to SWPL action on Friday against Dundee United.
