Liverpool are close to extending the contracts of captain Virgil Van Dijk and talisman Mohamed Salah, according to The Athletic.

The pair are in the final year of their current deals, and Liverpool fans feared they could walk away for free alongside Trent Alexander-Arnold.

However, Van Dijk announced earlier this week that progress had been made on his new contract. He is now set to continue his association with the club, which started in 2018.

Van Dijk proved one of the best January signings of all time, immediately shoring up a porous Liverpool defence and leading the club towards multiple domestic and continental trophies.

The 33-year-old remains one of the best in the business, although rough games against Fulham and Everton show his powers are waning, and Liverpool should find a successor this summer or next.

Meanwhile, Salah continues to spur Liverpool on with his goals and assists. The Egyptian has recorded 32 goals and 22 assists this term.

There were genuine fears he could leave Liverpool and move to the Saudi Pro League, but they have managed to tie him down until 2027.

It would have been difficult to replace Salah’s production and none of the reported targets looked capable of matching the former Chelsea and Roma attacker.

With both deals set to be signed in the coming weeks, Liverpool will focus on reinforcing other areas of their squad.
