Pep Guardiola handed injury scare ahead of huge week
Manchester City restored some confidence when they thrashed Newcastle 4-0 at the Etihad on Saturday.
But Pep Guardiola was handed a huge injury scare ahead of a big week in which City face Real Madrid in the Champions League and Liverpool in the Premier League.
City travel to the Bernabeu on Wednesday for the second leg of their Champions League play-off, trailing 3-2 from the first leg. Liverpool then visit the Etihad on Sunday.
City were given a major scare when Erling Haaland appeared to jar his knee late in the win over Newcastle.
Haaland immediately came off and looked to be in pain as he sat on the bench for the closing stages.
But the striker then walked around the pitch after the match and Guardiola appeared confident when asked about the injury
“When he was down, everyone was scared but he got up and walked smiling like always,” the manager said. “I didn’t speak to him or the doctors but the doctors didn’t come with bad news so hopefully he is fine.”
Potential return date: Wednesday February 19, vs Real Madrid (A)
Ruben Dias was not in the City squad for the Newcastle game.
It was said the defender was “not fully fit” after playing the full 90 minutes against Real Madrid last week.
But it is not believed to be a serious injury for Dias, who City will hope to have back for the trip to Madrid.

Jack Grealish missed the Newcastle game with the hip injury he suffered in last week’s 3-2 defeat to Real Madrid.
But speaking before the Newcastle game, Guardiola hinted the problem was not particularly serious.
"It's not as tough as what Manu [Akanji] has done but I don't know if tomorrow he will be ready,” confirmed the City manager.
“I don't think so, but we will see, we will assess in the next hours.”
Potential return date: Unknown
Like Dias, Nathan Ake also sat of the Newcastle game, having been replaced after an hour against Real Madrid.
Guardiola did not provide any fresh update on Ake’s fitness on Saturday, and it remains to be seen whether the Dutchman recovers in time to face Real at the Bernabeu.
