Schlupp or Tierney, maybe Ings, take your pick – Celtic transfer action moves on London

Amid speculation this afternoon that Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers, together with Celtic CEO Michael Nicholson and club Chairman Peter Lawwell boarded a flight for London before 4pm, Anthony Joseph from Sky Sports reports that Celtic have made a loan offer for Crystal Palace utility player Jeffrey Schlupp with a deal close to being agreed.

UPDATE!

And transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirms “Jeff Schlupp from Palace to Celtic, here we go! Verbal agreement done on straight loan, no buy option.” That does NOT mean that the trading in London is over with journalist Scott Burns stating that it’s a case of Schlupp plus one this evening in terms of incomings.

Jeffrey Schlupp can play left-back

Jeffrey Schlupp will provide Brendan Rodgers with the cover at left-back should there be no last minute changes to the Kieran Tierney situation. Schlupp has rejected multiple approaches by Championship sides to leave Palace in this window but Celtic is apparently of interest to him.

Striker options for West Ham

Celtic are also rumoured to be interested in West Ham’s Danny Ings as we move into the closing hours of the transfer window. With West Ham keen on bringing in Daniel Cummings in this transfer window after agreeing a pre-contract with the Celtic Academy talent who made his first team debut for Celtic at Villa Park last midweek in the Champions League, there could be some leverage on this one too.

Celtic earlier today rejected an improved £500k bid from West Ham for Cummings, who is now in the final few months of his Celtic contract. Why keep him, especially when the cross border development fee is only £350k. The answer to that is simple. Celtic lack striker cover after selling Kyogo but Danny Ings could provide than and in doing so remove the barrier to Cummings joining West Ham now rather than in the summer.

Kieran Tierney at the 11th Hour

And Kieran Tierney’s loan move to Celtic from Arsenal stalled leaving Celtic short at left back after Alex Valle was allowed to cut short his season long loan from Barcelona. Expectations were high that Tierney, who has already agreed a pre-contract to return to Celtic in the summer would be allowed to leave on loan in the January window.

That was blocked by Mikel Arteta who yesterday despite subbing off his left back, left Tierney on the bench as an unused substitute. The Scotland international looked rather annoyed by that, given he’d been refused the request to head to Celtic in this window as Arsenal wanted to keep him for their title challenge. Maybe there will be some movement on this one, just as we predicted a few days back?

Multiple London tasks

Why you may ask does it take three senior Celtic officials to head to London at the eleventh hour of the January transfer window, which closes at 11pm tonight?

Maybe there are multiple destinations with trips to Crystal Palace, West Ham and Arsenal to see what deals can and cannot get done?

When it’s only a blow to Celtic and not theRangers – Daily Record logic

In other news Daily Record report that Lennon Miller will NOT be leaving Motherwell in this window and reckon that his is a blow to Celtic. Seem to remember them linking Miller with a move to both Glasgow giants, so you might wonder why it’s not a blow to theRangers too?

Anyway Celtic’s interest in Miller, who remains sidelined by injury, was always for the summer window rather than now. Even of Celtic did sign the player the expectation is that it would have been on the basis of an immediate loan back to Motherwell. Had an offer for the midfielder come in that met with Motherwell’s valuation then Celtic would surely have been alerted.

The clock is ticking, expect at least one signing before 11pm, but preferably two. Eyes on the prizes Celtic.
