This season, Harry Kane has caused significant debate regarding his effectiveness at Bayern Munich.
Despite starting the season in breathtaking form, the England captain has struggled to make an impact since the winter period started, with penalty kicks becoming the forward’s most reliable source of goals.
As well as this, in the four games in which Bayern have dropped points when Kane has featured, the Englishman has failed to score, with Bayer Leverkusen, Borussia Dortmund, and Eintracht Frankfurt nullifying the striker’s threat.
This only emphasises that Der Rekordmeister have been unable to rely upon Kane in big games this season, leading to the criticism aimed towards him.
Now, former Bayern midfielder Stefan Effenberg has suggested a potential successor for Kane, should the record champions look to cut their losses on their record signing.
Speaking on Sport1 (via Bild), Effenberg suggested that Vincent Kompany’s side should look to acquire Patrik Schick from Bayer Leverkusen:
“This is a striker who absolutely makes the difference, not only physically but also technically brilliant. This is an incredible striker. Bayern would definitely like to have him in their ranks. He would even be one of the best players for Bayern Munich after Harry Kane.”
So far this season, Schick has recorded 15 goals in 20 Bundesliga appearances, with injuries and competition with Victor Boniface holding back the 29-year-old from pushing Kane at the top of the goalscoring ranks in the league.
However, despite receiving nearly 700 fewer minutes in the league than Kane, Schick boasts a better non-penalty xG per 90, with the Leverkusen striker’s 0.86 compared to Kane’s 0.49, as per FBref.
While this could suggest that Schick would offer more attacking threat than the England international, it has to be appreciated the work Kane offers Bayern in build-up play, with seven assists compared to Schick’s zero.
On top of this, Schick has failed to prove that he can become a regular feature in the Bundesliga with a rather frustrating injury record.
The 29-year-old could undoubtedly succeed at Bayern, but whether Bayern would put their faith in an injury-ridden 29-year-old forward is less guaranteed.
