When you look ahead to how the next iteration of the Manchester City squad could look, you do cast your mind over where the current City players may fit into City’s rebuild. In the case of Manchester City’s senior players, you sense that some will stay and some will depart the club. That is a move that will happen as the world champions look to rebuild Pep Guardiola’s squad.

But one player who isn’t quite a senior player is Matheus Nunes. When you look at how he is utilised by Pep Guardiola you get the feeling that there just may not be a role for Nunes in City’s rebuilt squad. If he isn’t played in midfield you just don’t see where he fits into the future of Manchester City. That’s not necessarily his fault but how Pep Guardiola has used him this season indicates that he isn’t a midfielder. That’s where the issues do lie for Matheus Nunes.

As per transfermarkt.com, Matheus Nunes played primarily as a right-back or on the left wing this season. At times he has been serviceable in both roles. But on other occasions, he has struggled, especially at right-back. His errors against Manchester United in City’s 2-1 derby defeat in December do come to mind. That’s the issue at hand for Nunes’ future at Manchester City. He isn’t a right-back, nor is he a winger. Nunes is a midfielder by trade but he doesn’t seem to be suited to being a midfielder in a Pep Guardiola side. His strongest attributes aren’t suited to City’s play. That’s what has forced him to be played out of position. You do feel that it will also be why he likely doesn’t fit into Manchester City’s rebuild either.

Fabrizio Romano has reported for TeamTalk that Matheus Nunes could leave Manchester City in the summer. When you look at how currently fits into Pep Guardiola’s squad and how he could for the future that may be the best move for him. It isn’t a knock of Matheus Nunes as a player but it’s just the reality of where he sits in Pep Guardiola’s squad and where he could potentially fit or not fit into Manchester City’s rebuilt squad.
