Newcastle United’s 2-1 win in the Carabao Cup final against Liverpool ended their 70-year spell without a trophy.

Victory saw Eddie Howe’s men avenge their cup final defeat in the exact same competition two years ago, and writes this current set of players into Newcastle history.

However, for most teams in the Premier League, their wait for a major trophy continues, whilst some have yet to taste victory in their entire existance.

Here are the last times all 20 current Premier League teams managed to win major trophy:

N/A – Bournemouth, Crystal Palace, Fulham, Brighton and Brentford

There are five teams currently playing in the Premier League who are yet to win a major trophy in their history. Bournemouth are the only side out of the five to have won a trophy, claiming the Football League Trophy in 1983/84, but this is not classed as a major trophy.

Crystal Palace, Fulham, Brighton and Brentford are the other four yet to head down victory lane, but Palace, Fulham and Brighton, alongside Bournemouth all still have a chance to win the FA Cup this season. One of Palace and Fulham will progress to the semi-finals, with both teams facing each other in the quarter-finals, whilst Brighton face Nottingham Forest and Bournemouth host Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City.

Southampton – 48 years and 10 months

This has been a season to forget in the Premier League, and their run without a trophy will continue into a 50th year as they are out of all cup competitions this campaign. The 1976 FA Cup was the last time the Saints tasted cup success, although like Bournemouth, they did win the Football League Trophy in the 2009/10 season.

Wolves – 45 years

Saturday 15th March 2025 marked the 45th anniversary of Wolverhampton Wanderers last piece of major silverware, when they won the League Cup in the 1979/80 season. They also won the Football League Trophy in 1987/88, but once again this does not fall into the major category.

Ipswich Town – 43 years and 10 months

This year marks the 44th year since Ipswich Town won their last major trophy, the 1980/81 UEFA Cup. The Tractor Boys have won the old First Division once, with the UEFA Cup victory their third and thus far final piece of major silverware.

Nottingham Forest – 34 years and 11 months

For a club steeped in history like Nottingham Forest, this season will be their 35th year without a major trophy, with the 1989/90 League Cup being their last. Although they did win the last Full Members’ Cup in 1991/92, this competition was only created after English teams were banned from Europe following the Heysel Stadium disaster.

Everton – 29 years and 10 months

Everton last tasted major trophy success in the 1995 FA Cup, and this season will be the 30th year since then. The Toffees did win the 1995 Charity Shield, but that is not classed as a major piece of silverware. After being knocked out of the FA Cup by Bournemouth, their drought will go into its a 31st year.

Aston Villa – 29 years

Still fighting in two competitions this season with the FA Cup and Champions League, Aston Villa are looking to end a 29-year trophy drought. The Villains last tasted success in the 1995/96 League Cup.

Tottenham – 17 years and 1 month

The team that probably get the most media attention regarding the gap since their last trophy success, Tottenham have one final chance to end their 17-year silverware drought with the Europa League this season. Their last trophy win came in the 2008 League Cup after a 2-1 win over Chelsea.

Arsenal – 4 years and 7 months

Arsenal follow their north London rivals in having the next biggest gap between trophies with four years and seven months. Mikel Arteta was the man in charge of the Gunners’ last major trophy success, and has one final chance to end their drought with victory in the Champions League.

Leicester City – 3 years and 10 months

Premier League Champions only nine years ago, Leicester City, led by former manager Brendan Rodgers, also defeated Chelsea in the 2020/21 FA Cup final to lift the trophy.

Chelsea – 3 years and 1 month

2021 and 2022 were great years to be Chelsea fans. The Blues, led by now England manager Thomas Tuchel, won the Champions League, the UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup in the German’s first year in charge. Since then, they are yet to taste major silverware success, and it is now three years and counting for the west Londoners.

West Ham – 1 year and 9 months

Jarrod Bowen’s dramatic late goal against Fiorentina ensured David Moyes’ men won their first European trophy in June 2023, the Europa Conference League, and a first piece of silverware since 1980.

Liverpool – 1 year and 1 month

This will more than likely come to an end in the next two months when they are confirmed as Premier League Champions, but for now their last silverware success was in the 2023/24 Carabao Cup.

Manchester City – 10 months

Pep Guardiola’s side only have one more chance to salvage their season by winning the FA Cup. Their 2023/24 Premier League success was only ten months ago, but this has been a long, tough season for the Citizens.

Manchester United – 10 months

One week after their noisy neighbours won a fourth consecutive league title, Manchester United defeated City in the 2023/24 FA Cup, and will have another chance to add further silverware to their cabinet this season by winning the Europa League.
