How does Coventry City owner Doug King's net worth stack up in comparison to his top flight counterparts?
Coventry City are a club on the up. The Sky Blues have been knocking on the door of promotion to the Premier League for years now, and hope 2024/25 will finally be their time.
It's been a topsy-turvy ten years for the former Premier League club, who have been as low as League Two and as high as an FA Cup semi-final. In November 2022, Doug King purchased an 85% stake in the Championship club, which eventually became 100% two months later.
Later that year, Coventry would heartbreakingly lose the richest game in football on penalties, denying them a first return to the top flight since 2001. After narrowly missing out on the play-offs last season, it's expected that the Midlands side will be gunning for a place in the top six again this season.
With that in mind, this is how King's net worth holds up against his Premier League rivals.
Information on the businessman is still somewhat scarce. However, there is more than enough out there to paint a picture of how much the City owner is worth.
Alongside his commitments with his Championship football club, King is CEO of two businesses on top of this. The first of which is a sustainable farming organisation called Yelo. King is said to be heavily invested in the business, reportedly pumping over £70 million into the company to help develop its infrastructure.
The Coventry local is also CEO of RCMA Capital LLP, which oversees investments of over $400 million. Whilst he may not be experienced when it comes to football, King certainly has the credentials when it comes to the business side of the game.
All of this has led to him obtaining an estimated net worth of $400 million. Whilst this isn't a fully accurate figure, it will certainly be in the ballpark of what the Yelo CEO is worth.
According to a study conducted by GiveMeSport, only two Premier League owners have an estimated net worth of under £1 billion.
The richest club in England is Newcastle United, blowing everyone out of the water with their owners, the Saudi Public Investment Fund, having an estimated net worth of £478 billion. This is over twenty times more than their nearest competitors, Manchester United.
At the other end of the spectrum is Brentford. The Bees have become an established Premier League side, despite their limited finances compared to the competitors. Owner Matthew Benham has a reported net worth of £216.3 million, which is the lowest in the league by some margin.
This bodes well for Coventry, as they would also be in a similar boat to the London-based outfit when it comes to finances.
According to the study, King would be the second least wealthy owner in the division, with only the Bees owner Benham behind him.
As previously mentioned, Brentford is a prime example of how Coventry would hope to operate if they won promotion to the Premier League. Of course, the Sky Blues would need to pay the big bucks for top players if they wanted to compete at the sharp end. It goes without saying competing at the top of the league wouldn't be the target though.
Coventry certainly have the financial capabilities and facilities to become an established Premiership club. King's experience in business management offers a key boost to how the club would operate as well, using his wisdom to make decisions that will benefit the club.
Just a year ago, King's side were beaten in the richest game in football on penalties. Not only did this cost them their return to the Premier League, but it reportedly cost them between £135 million and £265 million in winnings.
That being said, if the side managed by Mark Robins was to go one better this season and win the play-offs, the money they would bank could be game-changing for the Sky Blues.
