Inter will have captain and talisman Lautaro Martínez to thank tonight after the Argentine striker set the stage for their 3-1 win against visiting Empoli.

Across what was otherwise a relatively dull opening 45 minutes of action at San Siro, Inter’s dominance on the ball counted for little as the Nerazzuri only managed to muster a handful of chances on the back of some exceptional individual quality.

An acrobatic attempt in the 14th minute from the aforementioned Martínez was well-saved by Empoli shot-stopper Devis Vásquez before the Argentine hitman again would come close ten minutes later on the half-volley after being put into the box, but his effort could only ring off the post and ultimately bounce wide.

Italian midfielder Nicolò Barella saw his half-volley whiz just inches over the post from outside of the area in the 37th minute in a bid to find a breakthrough, but the Serie A holders could not find the opener before heading into the dressing room at the break.

Roberto D'Aversa's Azzurri Empolesi looked just good enough in the defensive third to hopefully see out a decent result away from home, but it was not to last.

The home side would finally get the opening goal they deserved ten minutes after the restart when Martínez struck with a curling effort at range to put the Serie A holders into the lead, equalling Mauro Icardi's league goal tally (111) for a foreign-born player at the club.

Dutch international wingback Denzel Dumfries would double Inter's advantage to put Inzaghi's men out of sight on the night after he rose highest in the box to head home Kristjan Asllani's corner.

Sebastiano Esposito would peg one back for Empoli against his former side with six minutes remaining in normal time to give the champions a moment of pause, but a third goal on the night for Inter thanks to substitute Marcus Thuram restored their two-goal lead in the 89th minute with his 13th goal of the season.

Inter now sit just three points off league-leading Napoli and four points clear of Atalanta and boasting a match in hand over the pair, while Empoli sits winless in their last five and just one point clear of the bottom three.
