Inter Milan coach Simone Inzaghi feels that his team will need to show the “real” version of themselves against Cagliari this evening.
Inzaghi spoke to Italian broadcaster DAZN, via FCInterNews, ahead of today’s Serie A clash with the Rossoblu. He also updated on the fitness of Benjamin Pavard, Matteo Darmian, and Francesco Acerbi.
On paper, Inter are certainly the favourites in this evening’s match.
The Nerazzurri are the reigning champions of Italy. And this season, they are right in the thick of it at the top end of the table, even if the field is much more crowded than last time out.
Cagliari, on the other hand, are in the bottom three of the table.
The Sardinians will not be too surprised to have a relegation scrap on their hands.
But arguably, the results have not been what the performances for Cagliari this season. Particularly in recent weeks.
Cagliari had good chances to get a result against the likes of Fiorentina and Atalanta, for example.
Moreover, today Davide Nicola’s team are playing in front of their home fans. That could certainly become a factor.
Even with Cagliari’s intense motivation to get a result and undeniable quality, though, Inter should have what it takes to get the win they’re after.
But not if they play in a presumptuous or complacent manner.
Inter coach Simone Inzaghi remarked that “We’ll need a strong start.”
“We’ve been coming here to Cagliari for many years,” the Nerazzurri coach. “The fans here really push the team on, they’re good at starting matches off strongly.”
“But we’ve prepared,” Inzaghi said.
“We have to get off to a better start than we have in the last couple matches.”
“Even in great moments of form you can always improve every day,” Inzaghi stressed.
Inzaghi noted that “We know we have the Supercoppa coming up, and that’s very important for us.”
“But at the moment, our only thought is on Cagliari.”
“They’re coming off the back of three losses in a row. But those losses came despite excellent performances.”
“They’re tactically a very well-organized team,” Inzaghi said of Cagliari. “They have a good coach.”
“We’ll have to play like the real Inter,” the coach made clear.
Inzaghi also noted that “We’ve had five days to prepare for it after Como.”
“We celebrated Christmas with our families,” the Inter coach said.
“We got de Vrij back from injury,” Inzaghi noted. The Dutchman is back in the starting eleven this evening.
“And then Acerbi, Pavard, and Darmian stayed back. We’ll try to get them back as soon as possible.”
