Lautaro Martinez finally getting on the scoresheet was the “icing on the cake” for Inter Milan in yesterday’s emphatic Serie A win over Cagliari.
This is the view in today’s print edition of Rome-based newspaper La Repubblica, via FCInterNews.
Inter captain Lautaro Martinez’s goal drought was a major subplot in the buildup to yesterday’s match.
The Argentine had gone nearly two months without a goal in an Inter shirt.
For a player who has been the Nerazzurri’s top scorer in each of the past three seasons, this was certainly a disappointment.
Martinez did finally get his goal, though. It was a straightforward enough goal for the Argentine. He got between the Cagliari defender, kept himself onside, and turned in a Nicolo Barella cross.
But the sense of relief after Martinez finally scored was palpable.
It was hardly just Martinez’s goal that made it a feel-good evening for Inter, though.
The Nerazzurri scored three goals through three different scorers, including their captain.
Moreover, there was yet another clean sheet. This was Inter’s fifth straight clean sheet in Serie A, and a sign that their defensive struggles from the first couple months of the campaign are behind them.
Inter sent a clear message with their victory in Sardinia.
And Atalanta were only partly able to respond.
La Dea, who have perhaps marked themselves out as the most credible threat to Inter’s title crown, had to settle for a point away to Lazio.
And, with a performance like yesterday’s – and their captain back among the goals – there’s a sense that the Nerazzurri are not going to relinquish their grip on the title easily.
