The full-back joined Celtic on a deadline day move from Premier League side Crystal Palace, and the loanee has certainly made an impact in the short few weeks he has been in Scottish football.

Jeffrey certainly fits the bill

Brendan Rodgers has always spoken about his desire to introduce more physicality and power to this Hoops team since he replaced Ange Postecoglou back in 2023, and Jeffrey certainly fits that bill. The imposing figure of Schlupp has been really interesting to watch this past while, as he brings something completely different to what we have been used to these past several years with Greg Taylor.

With no real competition to speak of, that left-back spot has virtually been guaranteed for the former Killie man and many have been itching for more competition in that area of the squad. With Greg and the club currently unable to reach an agreement with the terms and conditions of a new contract, it leaves the door ajar for a potential permanent move to Paradise for Jeff, should he desire it.

Kieran Tierney already signed

With the return of Kieran Tierney already signed, sealed and delivered this last January transfer window, there’s no doubt that the Bhoys will be emerging stronger in the left-back position going forward. Tierney though will not be able to play every minute of every game, and his minutes will need closely monitored and managed, if we are to get the best of him again on his much-awaited return to the club.

With Taylor yet to sign an extension on his current deal, Michael Stewart reckons it’s a no-brainer for the club and Jeffrey to link-up on a permanent basis heading into next season. Speaking on the Scottish Football Social Club podcast, he said: “Do you know, that’s the interesting thing about Schlupp, obviously, because he can play up one. He is very comfortable stepping on the inside, where Greg Taylor and the team like to play anyway.

Schlupp fitted into the system straight away

“You know he’s fitted into the system straight away – seamlessly. You mentioned there the Tierney deal is done. I’m pretty sure that I saw Peter Lawwell speak about it in the accounts, and said that they have the deal in place for Tierney to come. So from Jeffrey Schlupp’s perspective, oh my word. Your sitting on your backside doing nothing at Crystal Palace, or your up at Celtic playing in the Champions League against teams like Bayern Munich, and potentially winning things and enjoying your football.”

“I would imagine Celtic will put a deal in place to try and sign him”

Stewart reckons it will be a question the Celtic hierarchy and Brendan Rodgers will be asking Schlupp come the close-season. “And come the summer, I would imagine Celtic will put a deal in place to try and sign him,” he said. “His decision is ‘ what better option are you going to get?’ You might not be playing every week, but as you see with Celtic – there’s so many games. He will play a good chunk of games if be was to sign on – even with Kieran Tierney coming back.”
